Are your AT Apps Compatible with the Latest iOS?

Here’s advice valuable to all iPhone and iPad users, but particularly essential if you (or your student or client) rely on apps as assistive technology.

Apple upgrades its iPhone operating system and expects us to hop on board. Yet, how do we know if our apps will still work if we accept the new iOS?

Belva Smith, Assistive Technology Specialist at Easterseals Crossroads, shows us how to verify if apps are compatible in this helpful video. Here is a step-by-step summary:

  1. Open “Settings”
  2. Open “General” (here you will see a red 1 indicating the need for a software update)
  3. Open “About”
  4. Open “Applications” — this is roughly halfway down the list visible on your screen.
  5. Review the list of apps. Those listed here are not compatible with the latest update (in this case iOS 11, if you haven’t updated just yet).

Smith recommends checking this list frequently to see when you can confidently update your iOS. You may want to wait before updating to see if the developers of your favorite apps catch up. Or you may need to find new apps that are compatible with the latest iOS that serve the same function.
